OOTD: A Birthing Confidence

Dress: Billabong (old) - XL
Skirt: Musee de Cluny skirt via Modcloth - 1X
Tights: Cuddlduds (wow, I wear these a lot)
Shoes: Lengthy Farewell Heel via Modcloth - 10

After experimenting with taking outfit pictures in various areas around the house, it finally occurred to me that I could utilize the red curtain in the living room as a backdrop. It's also nicely lit up during the day, so it doesn't look too dark either (it's actually a pretty dark red). I might try out different curtains or backdrops in the future, as well.

So... this dress! I bought this dress just under 2 years ago, and as I was standing in the dressing room I thought, "This hugs my body great! How flattering!" However, when I was looking at it in my closet the other day, all I could think then was how I had only ever worn it once. It's great that it hugs my body so nicely, but then that is the part about it that I also felt slightly uncomfortable with. It's also pretty short, which I never took into account in the dressing room. It's interesting how these simple observations can be overridden by the impulse to just buy whatever clothing item it is and take it home with me. Since then, I've become a lot more observational when trying on clothes, and thinking in terms of future wear or use. Like I said, I've only ever worn this dress out in public once. That's why when I saw it in the back of my closet, I decided that it had to be put to use.

Look how completely still I am... yes, so still.

Treating the dress like a really long shirt, I paired it with this skirt and it matched rather nicely. As I put it on it was one of those "Why didn't I think of this before?!" moments. Instead of spending its days rusting in my closet, I can now comfortably wear this dress layered with other things. I honestly don't think I would have come to that conclusion had I not started reading more personal fashion blogs. Right before I started this blog, I honestly didn't give it much thought.

School starts again tomorrow. I am always nervous the first day, but after that it's a lot easier and definitely a lot of fun. Here's to the beginning of a great semester!

  2. The dress looks adorable on you, both ways! It's probably because you're adorable. . . ;) I also NEVER thought of layering a dress under or over anything before reading blogs, and then I was like, "This seems so obvious, why have I never thought of this??" Ha.

I'm glad your confidence is birthing (being birthed?) or extending or however I should say it. I like reading about other people's journeys w/r/t self-confidence, because it makes me feel like we're all in it together. Solidarity!

    1. Haha, I know, right? That's one reason why I love fashion blogs.
I also like to read about the subject of inward journeys to be more confident in oneself. It's not something that we have to face alone! xo

  5. I love experimenting with backdrops, I think I've just found my new outfit photo place - pity it involves a bit of furniture moving to get the area clear ;)

I love the dress, it's great you can style it in so many different ways!

    1. It's funny that you mention having to move furniture for your new outfit photo place... I had to move my daughter's new playhouse in order for me to take these! If anyone saw what was going on behind the scenes they would probably be laughing.

  6. You have such amazing legs, I think the shorter hemline is very flattering on you. (the dress in general looks good on you but the legs are wowza!). It is fun how blogging and reading style blogs can inspire and change how you look at your closet, I'd never thought of putting a sweater over a dress before readings.(and that's about borderline stupid for someone who lives in alaska). Your words about overlooking things wrong with a garment just to buy it really stuck home, I've been guilty of doing that many times and I'm just now getting better about putting stuff back. The deals and the cheapness of the thrift store, it always got me.

    1. Aww, thank you, Katie! I think you're the only person aside from my fiance that has complimented my legs recently. (haha) Sweater over a dress should have been so obvious! I think it's easy to get into a mindset that an entire dress should be seen rather than that it's okay to cover it up with layers.

  7. You are absolutely stunning. Just came across your blog, and wow. I actually prefer the dress without the skirt. It really emphasizes your silhouette in an amazing way, and I'm just a fan of body-hugging dresses. Oh and those oxfords...I need them in my life.

    1. Thank you so much, Marie! I wish I was more comfortable wearing figure-hugging dresses out in public. I am sure that if I were to do it more often, it would be much easier. I went to your blog, and I definitely admire your style! Consider yourself watched, girl!
