Advanced Drawing: Project #4

Project #4 - Layering

Tools Used: Micron Pen on Mylar paper (First Layer), PAINT on Mylar paper (Second Layer), Graphite on Vellum paper (Third Layer), Watercolor on Yupo paper (Fourth Layer), Needle & thread to bind, and a single thread for hanging.

Guidelines: Must use 3 different mediums (I chose micron pen, graphite, and watercolor), at least one instance of using a medium on the backside of a layer (the highlights on the bones and birds with paint), bind all the layers together using anything we want (I used needle & thread)

Subject Matter: I wanted to do an optimistic piece about the subject of death, but I wasn't sure how to approach it. While doing some research on the internet, I came across a funerary practice called sky burial that caught my interest.
"Sky Burial is a funerary practice in the Chinese provinces of TibetQinghai, and Inner Mongolia and in Mongolia proper wherein a human corpse is incised in certain locations and placed on a mountaintop, exposing it to the elements (mahabhuta) and animals – especially predatory birds. The locations of preparation and sky burial are understood in the Vajrayana traditions as charnel grounds." - Wikipedia
There are logical reasons for this tradition. In the high mountaintops there is not an abundance of wood to burn a deceased body, nor are there suitable areas of soil for burial. Sky burial makes the most sense, and prevents the spreading of disease in the process. It is seen as an act of good karma.

It's quite tricky to take pictures of this project, as the Mylar paper is very reflective!
