Beginning Metalsmithing: Project #1

Do you see the face profiles and the eye in the middle?

I finally finished my first project in Beginning Metalsmithing class! When I first signed up, I was nervous because I hadn't worked with manipulating metal before (except maybe playing a Tool song backwards).

Objective: To make a pierced piece from a copper sheet.
Time to Complete: 3 class periods (2.75 hours each period)
Steps to Complete: Draw a design, use rubber cement glue to adhere design to copper sheet, cut off design section of copper sheet, use a drill press to make holes in the middle of areas that I want to cut out, put a tiny saw through the holes that I drilled, saw out the desired areas, file the piece, and then buff it.

The next project that we are going to work on is making a ring! I am super excited about it. I am going to make a ring for my middle finger, and my homework for that class over the weekend is to design it. So this metalsmithing adventure is to be continued!

    1. Thank you so much! It's not as hard as it looks, honestly! I was clueless how people do this stuff before the class, but now that I know I can appreciate it for what it is.

  3. I had wanted to take this class so badly but it'd filled up and years later I still haven't gotten around to taking it. I love silver smithing and have been lycky enough to know a few people who've worked with me but i wish i'd been able to get a more comperhensive base. I enjoy reading about your classes and art so much! Its going to be fun to see what your ring looks like! ( hopefully you'll post pictures of it?)

Do you read Locke and Key? For some reason this reminds me of the keys in the series. (PS, if you haven't read it, I'm TOTALLY using this comment as a promotion!).

    This is really great!

    1. This would make a cool pendant! I've had a few different ideas floating around, but managed to find a use for it as an accent on a fabric belt! :D
